Frequently Asked Questions

How does the PC Base work?

The PC Base works just like the portable base except it works with your computer. All your cameras are controlled directly by your computer.

You can change all the camera settings, check the battery status, signal strength and can even have the pictures automatically emailed to anyone!

Finally get real time results. The PC Base and the Portable Base are completely interchangeable in the field.

How far will the camera REALLY transmit?

The radios we use have the capability to reach out to 10 miles - However our testing has shown you have an effective range of around 1 1/2 miles with the standard antennas.

We do offer High Gain antennas that will increase the effective range out to 5+ miles in some areas.

How can I tell when I have a good signal between the camera and base unit?

There is a "Signal Test" button on the camera and the base unit that allows you to confirm communications between the base and camera.

This "signal test" can be performed from the base unit as well as from the camera unit.

Do you offer any picture managing software?

The best software we have found to manage/edit your pictures is Picasa and best of all it is Free!

Can I tell the camera to take a "Test" picture from the base?

Yes - You can take test pictures, check signal strength, battery status, add cameras and delete cameras all from the base unit.

Will it transmit through trees?

Yes - The BuckEye Cam does transmit very well through trees and foliage - Your range will be more affected by the terrain (hills) than foliage.

The signal can travel up hills/mountains and down hills/mountains but is unable to "curve" over hills/mountains.

What is the "Average" time between battery charges?

That varies - If you are using the solar charger and taking 10-14 pictures a day, you will easily get 9-12 months between charges.

Not using the solar charger? - Between 700 pictures and 1500 pictures per charge depending on how many night pictures you are taking.

What is the maximum distance the camera will take pictures?

We suggest keeping your "targets" within 20'-30', the closer the better! 15' is the best distance.

How many images will the camera hold?

Using the standard card (64MB) you can store about 2000 images on the card - 200 on the base unit and another 200 on the camera unit giving you a total of 2400 images.

If you need to be able to hold more images just purchase a larger memory card. The system uses a standard "SD" style memory card.

If you are using the PC Base System you can store unlimited number of pictures!

Do I have to install software on my computer?

Portable Base System – No, The software is located on the memory card - Just click the "BuckEye Cam" and it runs from the memory card.

PC Base System – Yes, It comes with its own software.

What if I lose my memory card?

Just purchase a new SD memory card and put it into the base unit - the base unit will automatically update your new card with the software and you are ready to go.

Do I have to be a "computer genius" to make this system work?

Absolutely NOT - This system was designed to be simple to use.

Will I be able to add cameras to my existing system?

Yes - We offer "upgrades" for current BuckEye Cam users.  You can add up to 14 additional cameras to an existing system (14 total cameras to one base unit).

Will the wireless camera system also work as a "non wireless camera only" system?

Yes - The latest version of firmware allows users to choose between setting up your camera as a stand alone camera or a wireless camera.

No hardware changes needed you just choose how you want to use it!

If my neighbor has a BuckEye Cam and I have one will I receive their pictures?

No - The system is designed as dedicated units so there is no "cross talk" between separate units.

Can I keep the base unit in my house/garage?

You can keep the base unit anywhere you can receive the signal from the camera unit - We have customers that have the base unit installed inside their garages and they work just fine.

What happens when the battery goes dead on my base unit, will I lose all the pictures?

No - The pictures are automatically stored on the memory card when the base unit receives the pictures.

When the battery goes below the operating range on the base unit, the camera will stop trying to transmit the images to the base unit and store the images (up to 200) on its own internal memory.

Once power is restored to the base unit the camera will begin transmitting the "saved" images to the base unit.

How do I know when I need to charge the camera's battery?

You can test the camera's battery status from the base unit.

You will receive a "LowBat" message when your battery is almost completely drained.

Can I change the camera's settings from the base unit?

Yes - All the camera's settings can be changed using the software on the memory card. Place the memory card in to your computer, select the software, make your changes, update the card then reinstall the card in to the base unit.  The base unit will automatically change the camera settings.

Can I view the images using a "Palm Pilot" or any other hand held device?

As long as the system is capable of reading a standard "SD" memory card you should be able to view the images.

You can even change the camera settings using a "Palm Pilot"

Do I need to have a power source available for the camera or the base unit?

Portable Base – No, the entire system is battery powered so you can use the system anywhere.

PC Base – Yes, you will need to plug in your PC Base to any AC outlet. The PC Base will run off your computer's USB port but some computers may not be able to run it for long periods.

If I have a 5 camera system can I purchase an additional base unit and make a 3 camera unit and a 2 camera unit without sending the units back?

Yes - You can add and delete cameras in the field. You have the ability to configure the system in many different ways.
